Investing.com – Canada stocks were lower after the close on Friday, as losses in the Energy, Financials and Consumer Staples sectors led shares lower.
At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite declined 0.05%.
The best performers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were MAG Silver Corp . (TO:MAG), which rose 7.18% or 0.94 points to trade at 14.04 at the close. Meanwhile, Novagold Resources Inc . (TO:NG) added 3.80% or 0.20 points to end at 5.47 and Semafo Inc . (TO:SMF) was up 3.67% or 0.14 points to 3.95 in late trade.
The worst performers of the session were Canadian Energy Services & Technology Corp (TO:CEU), which fell 2.30% or 0.170 points to trade at 7.220 at the close. Intertain Group (TO:IT) declined 2.17% or 0.20 points to end at 9.03 and First Quantum Minerals Ltd . (TO:FM) was down 2.12% or 0.30 points to 13.83.
Rising stocks outnumbered declining ones on the Toronto Stock Exchange by 585 to 570 and 146 ended unchanged.
The S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was up 4.74% to 11.28.
Gold for February delivery was up 0.22% or 2.45 to $1133.15 a troy ounce. Elsewhere in commodities trading, Crude oil for delivery in February rose 0.30% or 0.16 to hit $53.11 a barrel, while the February Brent oil contract rose 0.05% or 0.03 to trade at $55.08 a barrel.
CAD/USD was down 0.48% to 0.7387, while CAD/EUR fell 0.49% to 0.7070.
The US Dollar Index was down 0.08% at 102.99.
