U.S. national wireless carrier Sprint Corp. (NYSE:S) is launching C3PO (Clean CUPS Core for Packet Optimization where CUPS: Control & User Plane Separation), which is an open source NFV/SDN-based mobile core reference solution. The latest launch is basically designed to significantly improve performance of the network core by providing a clean, streamlined, high-performance data plane.

Developed in collaboration with Intel Corporation’s (NYSE:T) Labs over the last four years, Sprint boasts of its C3PO to streamline mobile core architecture by collapsing multiple components into few network nodes as possible. The carrier reported that it was able to achieve 1.63 Mpps (million packets per second) throughput in lab tests conducted on Dell EMC (NYSE:EMC) DSS 9000 rack scale infrastructure with compute sleds running dual socket 14 core Intel Xeon processors E5-2680 v4.

Meanwhile, Sprint and Intel are also working towards creating a platform for further 5G wireless network core.

Growth Prospects

The main purpose behind open sourcing C3PO is to operate the industry through a common approach of VNF/SDN functioning with a single SDN-based network cloud. This launch should help Sprint adapt more quickly to market demands and scale new services more efficiently and cost-effectively.

The company claims that C3PO makes traditional mobility architectures and software designs more streamlined, efficient, and scalable. The system is designed to be used by global operators and other third parties for commercial applications. Moving forward, the company is working towards strengthening the C3PO code and extending its applications to a variety of cases, including the Internet of Things.

The Open source development helps in rapid innovation and also streamlines processes and removes confusion on specifications and their interpretation.

Other Carriers to Open Source their Platform

Other major players are forging ahead in the SDN/NFV space too. Last year, U.S. telecom giant, AT&T Inc. (NYSE:T) introduced its Enhanced Control, Orchestration, Management and Policy (ECOMP) virtualization platform in the open source industry. Accordingly, Canadian telecom operator BCE Inc. (TO:BCE) and French telecom Orange S.A. (NYSE:ORAN) were the two telecom partners who tested AT&T’s ECOMP platform.

Currently, Sprint is a Zacks Rank #3 (Hold) stock. You can see the complete list of today’s Zacks #1 Rank (Strong Buy) stocks here.

Over the past three months, share price of Sprint declined by 15.3% compared with the Zacks categorized U.S. Wireless National industry’s loss of 6.5%.
